Be Nerdy. Be Fly. Be Nerdy McFly

You can be Urkel or you can be Juliet’s Romeo. You can be LeBron or you can be Poindexter. You can ace your tests or you can party late. You can rock white Ts or Lacoste Polos.

Or you can do all of the above. That would make you a Nerdy McFly.

Nerdy McFly? Isn’t that some sort of comic book?

No, it’s an ideology all about balance. You can be smart and you can be cool at the same time. If you’re laughing, it’s because you’re not a Nerdy McFly yet. You don’t understand.

Enter the Nerdy McFly Manifesto, a combination of 101 rules which defines how a male goes about being hip gentleman who knows how to hit the books. The book, which can be purchased for just 15 beans, is the product of six University of Arizona students of different races and walks of life. But they had the same ideas in life: Look good, dress well, party hard, ace tests, be polite, find success in life. They took it back to the basics that are often forgotten, back to the days that would make any mother proud.

Make sure your belt matches your shoes. Hold the doors for women. Get a hair cut. Respect your elders. Et cetera.

“We all abide by these 101 rules,” co-author Egomeli Hormeku told the Arizona Daily Wildcat. “And those rules define what we do and how we do it. The ‘Manifesto’ is a collaboration of ideas to create a new-age male that focuses on tradition but is still all about innovation.”

Hormeku, or Ego, as the guys call him, is currently in New York promoting the book. He recently graduated from the University of Arizona with a double major in political science and physical science. He was part of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and is also a DJ, summing up Nerdy’s mission statement perfectly:

With an emphasis on demeanor, comportment, chances, choices, contemporary chivalry, and intellect, Nerdy McFly strives to be the change in the world by exploding social constructs and promoting balance between ideals and comfort. From skinny ties to changing a flat tire, from reading the classics to inventing a classic, Nerdy McFly is the future of America and is looking for new heights of knowledge to attain and new parties to crash.

A Nerdy McFly sits in the middle of the class, metaphorically speaking. He hits a game-winning home run and doesn’t taunt the opponent. He accomplishes his goals and lives as big as possible. There are many Nerdy McFlys in the world. Most just don’t know it yet.

With that, we bring you TSC’s All-Nerdy McFly Team:

Brains:

Jason Szuminski. He’s been out of baseball since he injured his throwing shoulder in 2005 but was able to crack the San Diego Pandres’ 25-man roster, becoming the only MIT grad to make it to the Majors. Oh yeah, and that whole bit about him being in the Air Force Reserve is just a plus.

Tiger Woods. In the seventh grade, Tiger had a GPA of 3.86. He spent two years at Stanford majoring in Economics before he went pro. Calculating the right force and angles for those crucial putts is key, too.

Steve Kerr. Spent much of his childhood in Lebanon before playing for the University of Arizona. He had a 15-year pro career, did some broadcasting and is now the GM for the Suns. Now that’s a true Nerdy McFly.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Played football for the University of Miami, was The Rock in the pro wrestling world and now is a movie star.

Percy “Lil’ Romeo” Miller. The son of Master P has put out three solo rap albums and two compilation albums. He had his own show on Nick called Romeo! and though he’s only a two-star recruit, he’s going to play basketball for USC next season on a full-ride scholarship. Paying his own tuition wouldn’t dent his bank account, but if you can get away with people giving you money to go to school, you’re definitely a Nerdy McFly.

Tyler Hoechlin. This actor played Tom Hanks’ son in The Road to Perdition then played Martin Brewer in the TV show 7th Heaven. He got some Hollywood tail when he dated Ashlee Simpson for about a year and he played on Arizona State’s and UC Irvine’s baseball team. That’s a home run in our books.
