Surprise, surprise: Nike’s workers abused
There are some things that go on in the world that you know about, but sort of just put it on the back burner until you actually get a grasp on the reality of the situation. We know that illegal immigrants come across the US borders but we’re blown away when we see the actual numbers. We know that elephants take massive dumps, but, again, we’re shocked to see the volume (though oddly enough, elephant crap can be recycled).
And, we know that Michael Jordan makes more from Nike that all Nike factory workers combined, but it isn’t eye-popping until we see some numbers or get some reports of the conditions that these workers are exposed to. Nike said Friday that one of its Malaysian factories has violated major worker rights violations, including filthy living conditions, garnished wages and withheld passports of foreign workers.
It’s understandable that a large company like Nike would want to increase its profit by hiring labor for almost nothing. It’s just a smart business move, no matter how selfish it is. But this is a multi-billion dollar industry. If Nike cut Michael Jordan’s paycheck, along with Derek Jeter’s and OJ Mayo’s — along with everyone else who endorses the brand — by just a few thousand bucks each could give the workers a better life.
Maybe these workers should consider going to work for an elephant dung-to-paper factory. Sorry factory workers, you just have a shitty life. Literally.
