Boozing frats vs. tailgating Dads: NCAA 1, NFL 0

Beer + football + Jen Sterger appearance = life.

Beer + football + Jen Sterger appearance = pretty much worth an arrest.

Proposal: Since that everlasting My School Parties Harder Than Yours debate is more meaningless than the entire existence of women’s basketball, why not combine the collective power of the NCAA’s top boozers and overtake the crown from the NFL?

At last weekend’s USF-KU game (yeah, that game) it appears that the first shot was fired (à la Lexington, Mass., in 1775) at the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Both teams won at Raymond James Stadium in front of 50,000 fans last weekend. However, USF more than doubled the number of arrests than at the Bucs game. For those keeping score: USF 76, Bucs 37 (in terms of arrest count).

A number of factors figure into these arrest and ejection rates, TSA spokeswoman Barbara Casey said, but the most prominent factor is what she called “amateur drinking” — adolescents who overindulge before and during the game, resulting in wilder behavior.

“We’re dealing with a lot of people who are over-serving themselves before the game,” Casey said, adding that people tend to be a little rowdier during games that kick off the weekend, such as the Kansas game.

Hold up . . . amateur drinking? It’s one thing to call USF rude or not-very-nice-hosts, but to imply that these scholarly students are at an amateur status? Do Bucs fans get paid to drink? Does Bud Light sponsor tailgaters?

A little insensitive to the Bulls Nation Student Body, don’t you think? Maybe they should cry and complain to the Kansas student newspaper.

BallHype: hype it up!
